R. M. Schindler, Architect | Kallis House, 1946
Rudolph Schindler’s 1946 Kallis House is a celebrated Hollywood Hills masterpiece, blending bold geometry, original woodwork, glass, and seamless hillside views.
One of Schindler’s most celebrated residential works, the Kallis House is a remarkable study in architecture responding directly to site.
Designed in 1946 for artist and film art director Mischa Kallis, the house steps down its steep Hollywood Hills slope through interconnected volumes, shifting rooflines, angled walls, terraces and expanses of glass. Rather than imposing itself on the hillside, the architecture follows it—creating a continuous relationship between interior space, landscape and views across the San Fernando Valley.
Inside, Schindler’s radical geometry is balanced by the warmth of mahogany, Douglas fir and plywood, with original built-ins integrated throughout the architecture. Frank Gehry famously studied the house while a student at USC.
Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #860, the residence underwent an extensive five-year restoration guided by Schindler’s original drawings and archival material at UC Santa Barbara. Original woodwork, windows, built-ins and the historic kitchen configuration were restored while the structure and building systems were comprehensively updated.
The result is an important piece of Los Angeles architectural history that remains remarkably livable nearly 80 years after it was designed.
